Put your unique skills to use for CHAS!
Learn about the great work of our Archive Project Volunteer, Jan.
Our Archive Project Volunteer, Jan Yeats proves that no matter what your talent is (and everyone has one!), you can share it with CHAS help support the children and families we care for. Here she tells us how she got involved.
“In 2012, I went to a Christmas coffee morning at the Ellon Kirk Centre and got chatting to a couple of committee members of the Gordon District Friends of CHAS (GDFC) group. They told me about CHAS’ work and their commitment to raising awareness and funds up North, and I instantly connected with the cause.
I was invited to the GDFC AGM in January 2013 where, to my surprise and delight, I was nominated and accepted as Secretary! I really enjoyed the role and loved attending the variety of fundraising events we hosted. I went to everything from ceilidhs to bucket shakes. Later that year, GDFC won the Daily Record Our Heroes Award off the back of fundraising £250,000 for CHAS - what a great night that was!
"I moved to Edinburgh at the end of last year. It was important for me to keep a connection with the charity and I was fortunate enough to meet up with the lovely staff at CHAS’ Head Office in the city. It was one of those moments where the timings just worked. They were looking for a volunteer with project management experience (which I have), to lead on an Archive Project to capture important moments in the charities history. The history of CHAS is rich with stories and moments of joy and my role is to look at ways to gather, store and preserve important items and memories to safeguard the CHAS heritage, from its humble beginnings, to where we are now with CHAS’ new look and name change!"
"It’s really exciting to get out and about visiting staff, gathering their stories and identifying important items across all the sites. I would highly recommend exploring where you could help at CHAS, as there are so many volunteering roles available. I get great joy out of supporting such a great cause, which makes a big difference to family’s lives who need it."
